In a significant step toward sustainable transportation, Oman will introduce its first-ever hydrogen-powered taxi service later this year, according to the Minister of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology, Eng Said Hamoud al Maawali. The service, starting with a fleet of 15 vehicles, will operate from Muscat International Airport, coinciding with the launch of the country's inaugural hydrogen fuel station.
This initiative aligns with Oman’s green mobility strategy, which promotes the adoption of zero-emission fuels like hydrogen and biodiesel. Supported by the Ministry of Energy and Minerals and the Civil Aviation Authority, the project highlights Oman’s commitment to sustainable innovation in transportation.
The hydrogen taxis will rely on a groundbreaking refueling station located near the airport. Developed under Oman Shell’s ‘Green Hydrogen for Mobility’ project, the station will produce 130 kg of green hydrogen daily. Equipped with a 120 kW solar energy system, fast electric vehicle charging points, and advanced environmental features like vapor recovery systems and wastewater recycling, the facility sets a global benchmark.
Saudi-based Hydrogen Systems has been contracted for the construction, operation, and maintenance of the station, marking a significant international collaboration. As Oman ventures into hydrogen technology, this project positions the nation as a leader in sustainable energy solutions.
