One Day Visit to Jebel Akhdar

This field trip offers a hands-on opportunity to understand the subsurface structures that drive the region’s energy resources. The trip will provide an opportunity to visit Birkat Al Mawz and Jebel Akhdar to explore some of the most significant petroleum reservoirs in the region.

Overview


At Birkat Al Mawz, participants will examine the outcrops of the Natih (equivalent to the Shilaif, Mishrif and Ahmadi reservoirs), Shuaiba, and Kharaib formations, renowned as important petroleum reservoirs. Additionally, at Jebel Akhdar, participants will study the Khuff Formation, another key reservoir rock that plays a crucial role in oil and gas exploration and production.


Additionally, during the short trek in Jebel Akhdar, participants will encounter exposures of significant Precambrian petroleum source rocks and potential reservoirs, offering an opportunity to examine some of the region's oldest geological layers that play a crucial role in hydrocarbon systems.

Field Trip Itinerary

Everything you need to know about the trip.

7:24am - HSE and Briefing of the route and objectives of the trip
9:30am - Coffee Break, Overview of the geology and history of the area
10:30am - Overview of the fossil coral garden (260 million years old), and the geology in the area, including relationship to petroleum reservoirs
11:15am - Visit to Bait Al Sharaf Museum, inside an old house in Jebel Akhdar, traditional rosewater factory, with Omani Halwa and Coffee
12:00pm - Short trekking (600m) from the village of Al Aqar to the village of Al Ain, overview of faults and fractures in carbonates and clastics
1:00pm - Lunch Stop and Prayers
2:00pm - Drive back to Muscat, with one toilet stop on the way
